The Art of Illustration
Category: Activities & classes
Greetings cards, storyboards, concept art, comics, graphic novels, children’s books, book covers, interior illustration for books, advertising, editorial and information artwork all come under the heading of ‘illustration’. Illustration art communicates and is artful. It uses all the skills of art-making and design and more. We begin with strengthening and building solid drawing skills and move on to experimenting with a range of art techniques, colour work, and design. Also covered are the important interpretive and narrative skills that underpins every successful illustration whether it is a single image or a sequence of images. Included are sessions with an art model to help you develop your figurative drawing skills and put motion into your work. Assignments are designed to move you forward within a creative discipline. Focus is on building a strong portfolio that could one day get you work. Illustration markets and how to approach them will also be covered.
Bring to your first session an A3 sketchbook and graphite and charcoal pencils. More art materials will be required as appropriate to the assignment. Critiques and one on one guidance is an important aspect to class work along with self-directed work needed to complete assignments.
There will be opportunities for furthering your work in future 10 week sessions on demand.
Tutor information: Anne-Marie is a practicing illustrator whose work has been published in children’s books, advertising and editorial projects. She has an MA in illustration and teaches illustration, animation and design at Buckinghamshire New University.
